Nutrition Counseling
Mar 15, 2021 | EducationWhat we eat and drink makes a big difference to the health of our teeth, not to mention the rest of our bodies. While it is good to enjoy occasional treats in moderation, there are certain foods and drinks that should be limited and consumed with care, primarily ACIDS, SUGARS and STARCHES.
Examples of ACIDS:
- juices
- sodas
- energy drinks
- citrus: lemons, limes, grapefruits
- vinegars
- wine
- tea
- coffee
Acid containing foods allow for the breakdown of enamel and contribute to tooth decay. If your teeth have been exposed to acids, rinse well with water and wait 30 minutes before brushing-the acid can soften the enamel, and brushing immediately in the acid environment can harm the enamel. After 30 minutes, the acidity neutralizes and it is safe (and encouraged!) to brush.
Examples of SUGARS & STARCHES
- dried fruits
- sticky candies
- hard candies
- chips
- crackers
- cookies
- breads, rolls, muffins
Sugars and starches, especially those that get stuck to our teeth or that we keep in our mouth for a long time, can create tooth decay. After eating or drinking these, rinse well with water and brush, paying attention to the groovy chewing surfaces and the gumline.
Steps that help protect the teeth include:
- drinking plenty of water
- limiting other drinks to 1/day with meals & reducing the amount of time teeth are exposed to them (less than 20 minutes)
- using products containing xylitol
- and as always, consuming plenty of fresh fruits, veggies, lean proteins, sources of calcium and other vitamins and minerals
- using fluoride products and brushing and flossing regularly
